JAMES VALRANCE

Jim was born in Detroit in 1922 and received his schooling there.  Jim proudly graduated from Michigan State University.  He has lived in several locations in the Detroit area as well as Naples, Florida.  He currently spends summers at his home on Burt Lake and winters in Novi, Michigan.  Jim has three children and six grandchildren. 

He was a chemist, involved in sales and eventually President and Chief Executive Officer of his company.  He has chaired the Board ofTrustees of Rosedale Gardens Presbyterian Church and Bushnell Congregation Church.  He is also a member of out Church as well. He was acitive in the Boy Scouts and the White Goose Association.  He has volunteered with Habitant for Humanity in Florida.  Jim enjoys gardening and reading.  Golf has also been an important activity for Jim.  He has been a member of the Plum Hollow, Imperial and Indian River Country Clubs.

    SYLVIA LENZOTTI

Sylvia was born and raised in Fort Scott, Kansas and also lived in Arcadia, Kansas before moving to Michigan.  She has one son, Frank, two gandchildren and three great-gandchildren.  She worked as a salesperson, department managr and fashion coordinator for various retail clothig stores. She enjoys gardening and her great gandchildren.  Sylvia is a welcome addition to our church family.

SUZANNE "SUSIE" JONTZ

Susie was born and raised in Columbus, Ohio-another Buckeye in our Congregation!  She attended Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri, where she earned her associate's degree.  She then returned to Ohio and graduated from The Ohio State University with a degree in Business Administration.  Susie has been coming to Topinabee for 79 years  (hard to do when you are only 49) to spend her summers at the family cottage.  One summer she met a handsome young bell hop at the Topinabee Hotel and they later were married at the Topinabee Community Church.  The bell hop became a doctor and they settled in Fort Wayne, Indiana, where Susie still maintains a home.  She spends her winters in Bonita Springs, Florida, and summers on Burt Lake. She has four children, eight grandchildren and seven step-great grandchildren.  She worked as an executive secretary at Allison Division of GMC. She belongs to several organizations including: P.E.O and Psi Iota Xi philanthropic organizations, Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority and the Fort Wayne Medical Alliance.  Susie enjoys needlepoint, reading, photography and can out fish anyone in the congregation.  She is mostly known as being Marilyn Bower's Big Sister!

Art was born in Flint, Michigan.  After graduating from High School in Flint he did a four year apprenticeship to be an electrician.  He spent his working career with the Flint Board of Education as an electrician.  In retirement, Art has worked as a pro-shop assistant at the Indian River Golf Club.  He and his wife Lela have two children, five grandchildren and five great-grand children.  He is a member of the Eagles and Michigan Association of Retired School Employees. He enjoys golfing, deer hunting, playing euchre and participates in The Rivertown Follies.  He is a member of the Church Council and is chair of the Church building committee.

                     LISA KING

Lisa was born in Petoskey and was raised in Topinabee. She received her BA degree in English from Central Michigan University.  She has her Elementary Certification and is working on her Masters Degree from Lake Superior University.  She has lived in Mt. Pleasant, Pleasant Ridge and Livonia, Michigan and Cincinnati, Ohio.  She worked at Hoppies from 1988-2001 and was a substitute teacher in this area from 1996-2001.  She worked as a teacher, reading director, literacy coach and basketball coach in the Waterford, Mich. School District. She is currently working in the Vanderbuilt School District as a teacher, Student Council Advisor, and grant writer.  She won a Principal's Award in 2008 and was an Honor Usher at LSSU in 2009. She belongs to the Michigan Reading Associaton and Michigan Education Assn.She enjoys gardening, boating and anything with kids. Lisa is a member of the Church Council and serves as Eduction and Nursery director for our Church.

MARILYN AND RICHARD ROSNER

Marilyn  was born and attended school in Pontiac, Michigan.  She attended Wayne State University for three years following high school graduation.  She met Dick on a blind date and - as they say - the rest is history.  They lived in Clarkston, Michigan.  She worked for ten years as a legal secretary and as a secretary for General Motors for twenty-seven years at the Pontiac Plant and the Truck and Bus Plant.  They have a son and two grandchildren.  Marilyn was President of the Clarkston Historical Society and received an award from the State for working to incorporate Clarkston in the National Register of Historic Places.  She was a long time member of the Clarkston Methodist Church.  Marilyn has been trained as a Stephen Minister and has used these skills to assist people going through difficult times such as divorce, death in the family and those in poor health. She is active in the Straits Area Herb and Garden Club, Seedums Garden Club, and Venice Garden Club.  Her hobbies are gardening, reading and travel.

Richard "Dick" was also born in Pontiac and graduated from High School in Waterford.  He was in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Sigourney.  After the service he attended the Detroit Police Academy and took additional courses through Wayne State and Michigan State in Criminal Law.  He was a detective with the Waterford Township Police Department before becoming Chief of Security for General Motors.  They rented a place on Burt Lake and enjoyed it so much that they bought "This Old Boathouse" in 1969 when the owner decided to retire.  Dick is a member of the American Legion and Cheboygan Yacht Club where he served as Commodore.  His hobbies are hunting, fishing, boating and golfing.

GAIL GARRISON

E. Gail Garrison was born and raised in Topinabee as a member of the Chamberlain family.  The Chamberlains were a very active family in the Topinabee Community and Church.  Gail graduated from Cheboygan High School, attended Western Michigan University for two years and took several classes at Wayne State University.  She worked at the paper mill in Cheboygan for three years before moving to Detroit to work in an office job.  She was married and moved to California and worked for NW Aviation.  When her husband went into the service she moved back to Detroit and worked for a company that made fuel pumps for aircraft. Her husband returned from the war in 1945.  They had a son and three daughters and Gail stayed home with the children.  She has three granddaughters, and a grandson and 2 great grand daughters and two great grandsons.  Later she returned to work and was employed by the Detroit Board of Education for 23 years working in the budget department.   She also worked part-time for a professional testing firm and an accounting firm. 

She retired in 1988 and moved back to Topinabee.  She and Charlie spent their winters in Arizona for several years.  In retirement she has enjoyed sewing, cards, travel and the theater.  She has been a lucky person and has won a station wagon and a cruise to Tahiti in sweep stake contests. 

Gails's family has traced her lineage back to Charlemagne and she is 33 generations removed from him.  She has been an active member of the Topinabee Community Church for many years.

MAXINE AND BOB WALTER

Bob Walter was born in Pell Lake, Wisconsin and moved to Claysburg, Pennsylvania at an early age.  Little did he know that on the other side of the mountain a young lady was living who had  moved to Flint, Michigan at an early age.  One of her cousins married one of Bob's cousins and they told Bob about all the jobs available in Flint working for GM.  Bob was looking for work and moved to Flint where the cousins introduced him to Maxine. As Bob said "the rest is history".

(Maxine was a high school classmate of Ted Shaw and both went to work for the telephone company after high schol.) Bob and Maxine had three children.  One daughter lives in Baraga and one in Grand Blanc and the third "is with God". They have five grandchildren and 3 great grand children. Maxine was a telephone operator for eleven years before going to work for Sears, Roebuck and worked there for 25+ years. Bob worked for GM for 11 years, Woodside Church for 3 years, before going to work for the Flint Board of Education for 25 years.  Bob enjoys woodworking and is a "jack of all trades".  He is a member of the retired school employee group-MARSP and volunteers at Hospice.  Maxine loves to read, play cards, gardening, crafts and working with church activities such as the choir. She is a member of the Indian River Library Board, and is treasurer of the Friends of the Library.  She is also a member of MARSP.

Bob and Maxine are very active in our church where Maxine is in charge of all potlucks and church meals and she and Bob handle the food that the Church donates to the food bank. They are real assets to the Topinabee Community Church.

 Debbie and Paul Chapoton

Debbie was born in Muskegon, Michigan and moved to Pontiac at an early age.  She attended school in Pontiac and graduated from Pontiac Central High School.  She graduated from Oakland University with a BA and MA degree majoring in Spanish. She taught Spanish at Utica High School for 31 years.  She worked as a lifeguard while going to school and participated in synchronized swimming.  She also worked as a consultant for a textbook company. Her hobbies are reading, writing fiction, boating swimming, tennis, biking and games. Debbie sings in the Church Choir.

Paul was born in Mt. Clemens and grew up in Utica.  He has a BA and MA from Oakland University.  He also has and ED.S. from Wayne State.  Paul taught Social Studies at Utica HS for 34 years.  He also served as baseball coach at Utica for 12 years and 6 years as baseball coach at Oakland University.  He enjoys railroads, model railroads, boating, biking, tennis, swimming, games and sports.

Debbie and Paul have 4 children and three grandchildren.  They found Topinabee after visiting the Monettes (Marcia taught with Debbie and Paul) liked the area, visited the church and decided this is where they wanted to make their retirement home.  They both had a love of log homes and they built a beautiful log home on Extension road.

Paul is currently chairman of the Church Council.

DAN, HEATHER AND TWINS ANDREA AND ANDREW DUNCAN

Heather was born in Kalamazoo and after high school she went through USAF Basic and training to become a dental assistant.  She also had training with the US Postal Service. She has lived in Wichita Falls, Texas, Duluth, Minnesota, Genoa, Nebraska, Marquette, Michigan, Grand Forks North Dakota, Alamogordo, New Mexico and Pascagoula, Mississippi. Hopefully, she has settled down and will be with us for a long time. She ended up in Topinabee when her father became pastor at our Church.

Dan was born in Cheboygan and has resided in Cheboygan county all his life.  After high school he received training as a paramedic and at the Michigan DNR Law Academy at LSSU.

They have five children and three grandchildren.  Dan has worked as a paramedic, hotel auditor and DNR Park's Officer and is now manager of Onaway State Park. Heather has worked as a dental assistant, high school secretary, insurance bookkeeper and rural mail carrier.

Heather's interests are crocheting, reading and music.  She serves as the church music director and organist.  The church is blessed to have someone with her musical talent that adds so much to our services. She has made CD's of her music that can be found on her web site-listed under websites on the front page of our web site. Dan is interested in Woodworking.  Both have been members of the Lion's club.

Heather has received the High School Handbook Award-tops in the state of Nebraska and is an honor graduate of the USAF Dental School.  Dan has received the Heroic Actions award. 

Heather and Dan are Church Deacons.

PAT AND BRIAN CALLAGHAN

Pat was born in Cincinatti, Ohio, and moved to Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, at an early age.  She graduated from Sault High School and then recevied her BS degree from Michigan State Univeristy.  While at Michigan State she played in the Spartan Bell Ringers and was a member of Zeta Tau  Alpha.  She taught high school health and physical education in Gladwin and Fowlerville, Michigan.  Pat has also taught in a cooperative pre-school and a private pre-school. She was nominated for "Volunteer of the Year" in Hillsdale and Grand Rapids. She is a Life member of the United Methodist Women and chosen as a United Methodist 2nd Century Woman.  She currently serves as secretary of the Inland Lakes Snowmobile Club and the Cheboygan County Genealogical Society and is a member of the Woodland Social Stitchers.  Her hobbies include: genealogy research, reading, gardening, basketry  and quilting.  Pat also enjoys boating and swiming in Mullett Lake.  

Brian was born and raised in the Sault.  He attended Michigan Tech, Sault Branch, the University of Michigan and graduated with a BS degree from Central Michigan University and a MA and Education Specialist degree from Michigan State University. He taught high school in Fowlerville and later served as principal.  He next was high school principal in Hillsdale and then Grandville.  Brian  became an ass't. superintendent and then superintdent of schools in Grandville.  He was active in Rotary and was elected President of the Fowlerville, Hillsdale and Grandville Clubs, served on the Board of Directors of the Southwest Grand Rapids YMCA and the State High School Principal's Organization.  He was elected to five terms to the Representative Council of the Michigan High School Athletic Association and served as President of that organiztion for nine years.  Brian enjoys, boating, snowmobiling, reading, playing cards and playing with the computer!   They have two sons and five grandchildren.

JUDY AND FRANK LENZOTTI

Judy was born in Detroit.  She lived in IIlinois, Texas and Arizona as a child growing up as a Air Force "Brat". She graduated from Michigan State Univesity.  She and Frank have two children and three gandchildren. She worked for RCA as a Computer Systems Engineer, Computer Services as a Contract Programmer and for the past 34 years she hs been employed by Compuware as a Mainframe Software Developer. Judy enjoys gardening, babysitting her grandkids, baseball, crafts and decorating Christmas trees. In 2009, she received an award at work for "Women Who Make Magic". She organizes Compuwares donations, wish list gifts and party for the Judson Childrens Home through work.  She has an ICCP certificate for computer professionals.  Judy has been the  Salem UCC Christian Education Committee.

Frank was born in Arcadia, Kansas and graduated from Melvindale High School.  He received his BBA degree from the University of Michigan. He has also lived in Washington D.C. and Pensacola, Florida.  After service in the US Navy he worked for Ford Motor Car Company, Chrysler, Honeywell information Systems,  Xerox Data Systems, and Compware Corporation. He enjoys skiing, flying-he is a private pilot-target shooting with handguns, motorcycles and all sports. He is a member of Phi Kappa Phi Fraternity Alumni Band, and a mentors program in Oakland County. They came up North skiing for several years before looking for property.  Frank asked someone who owned this big field covered with snow and the realator informed him that was Burt Lake.  They later purchased property on not in the Lake.  He has been "husband of the year" from 1970 to present.  (He says-self apointed).

MARILYN BOWER

Marilyn is a native of Columbus, Ohio.  After high school she attended Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri, where she received an associates in arts degree.  She went on to The Ohio State University where she earned a degree in elementary education. While growing up, she spent summers at the family cottage in Topinabee.  She still owns the cottage that is the second home north of the Topinabee Library.  Marilyn taught first grade for a couple of years and then quit to have her children. She has four children and eight grandchildren. She has lived in several communities including: San Antonio, Texas; Charleston, South Carolina; St. Louis, Missouri; Roanoke, Virginia; Cleveland, Ohio; Chicago, Illinois, and Atlanta, Georgia.  She spends her summers at her cottage in Mullett Lake Village and the rest of the year she is in Atlanta.  Her husband started the Michigan Lottery and if you haven't won, see Marilyn for the inside info!  She is a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma and enjoys reading and needlepoint. While growing up, Marilyn spent her summers in Topinabee and was a summer neighbor and good friend of Barb Pemberton.

BARBARA PEMBERTON 

Barb was born in Marion, Ohio, and her family has been coming to Topinabee since 1922.  She resides in the family cottage during the summer and spends the winter in the Grand Rapids, Michigan, area. The family cottage is the 4th house north of the library.  She spent a lot of time with Susie Jontz and Marilyn Bower (see their write up on this page) who also spent their summers in Topinabee.  After graduating from high school in Ohio she went to college in Columbia. Missouri.  She went to a Christian College for young ladies while Susie and Marilyn went to another college in the same town.  Barb said "they had a lot more fun" than I did!  After college she was married to a native of Grand Rapids and has made her home there for many years.   She has two children, four grandchildren and six great grandchildren.  Barbara worked as a receptionist in a florist shop at one time and now enjoys painting.  We enjoy having Barb join us for worship services in the summer.

BARBARA BURGTORF

 

Barb was born in Wolverine and graduated from Wolverine High School. She graduated from Central Michigan University majoring in Elementary Education.  Barb took several advanced classes beyond her BA degree. She taught in several rural schools and spent 35 years teaching with the Cheboygan Public Schools.  During the "war" she lived in Ypsilanti and worked as an inspector in a factory. Barb has two children-Charles and Beverly- and five grandchildren and three great grandchildren.  She a member of the Michigan and National Education Association and Michigan retired educators association.

PAT AND MARCIA MONETTE

Marcia was born and attended school in Detroit.  She graduated from Central Michigan University and received her MA degree from Wayne State University in Library and Information Science.  She was employed as a librarian at Utica High School and Davis Junior High.  She spends her time reading, biking, beach walking, volunteering and playing the piano. Marcia blesses the Church with her piano playing (and occasionally the organ) during Sunday worship services.  Marcia can be found working at most church functions and activities.  Pat "Uncle Buck" graduated from Mass City High School (in the western UP - for you trolls).   He also graduated from Northern Michigan University and received his Masters Degree in Educational Administration from Wayne State University.  Pat was a math teacher in the Utica Community School system, then became the Adult Education Director and then moved into the Director of Community Education position in Utica.  Pat's hobbies are skiing, golf, boating, landscaping and building construction.  They built a cabin on Wildwood Lake and then later purchased the property on Mullett Lake where they built a beautiful log home.  They have two sons, Michael and John and two granddaughters, Madeline and Josephine.

NELL KIRBY

Nell Kirby is one of our summer attendees.  She spends her summers at a cottage on Mullett Lake that her family built in 1942.  Her winter is spent in  Baltimore, Maryland.  Nell is a native of Owosso, Michigan.  She received her BA degree from the University of Michigan and her MA degree from the University of Wisconsin.  She is a retired faculty member of the Johns Hopkins' University School of Medicine. Nell taught rehabilitation and clinical nursing and worked with patients as well. She enjoys her "Up North" cabin experiences, travel, books, gardening, church and friends.  She continues her relationship with her Johns Hopkins' colleagues when in Baltimore.

JANE MOTSCHALL

Jane was born in Detroit, Michigan and grew up in Birmingham, Michigan.  During her high school years in Birmingham she was President of the Social Activities Committee and was selected as the May Queen during her senior year of high school.  She attended Mt. Vernon Junior College in Washington, DC.  During her marriage she lived in Detroit, Troy, Northbrook, Ill., Fairview Park, Ohio and Rancho Palas Verdes, California, and Topinabee.  She had five children ( one deceased) who live in Colorado, Iowa, the UP and Indian River.  She has sixteen grandchildren-9 girls and 7 boys.

She worked as a secretary to the research director at BBDO Advertising, secretary to the media director at MacManus, John and Adams' Advertising Agency.   After marriage she was the business manager's assistant a (Vital Care) and CENA  (Vital Care, Cheboygan Health Care).  Her interests include sports and wildlife and she is a member of the Humane Society. 

Jane's family had a cottage on Burt Lake for many years and so she was introduced to the area at an early age. Jane and her husband bought a cottage at Giauque Beach on Mullett Lake in 1970.  Jane spent her summers with the children at the cottage and her husband, a pilot, flew in from downstate on the weekends. They moved to California in 1982 but kept the cottage; and in 1985 they returmed to operate the Indian River Marina for five years.   With all the time she has spent in the area she does not consider herself a "fudgie!"

BARB AND ED SHAW

Barb was born in Van Nuys, California, and later moved to Detroit - and then to Flint during her Senior year in high school.  She met a classmate, Ted Shaw, at Flint Central High School and they later became classmates for life.  Ted was born in Flint and spent 35 years working for Ma Bell, AT&T.  He worked in Detroit, Wayne, Cadillac and Lansing. The last 20 years he worked out of Lansing as a Marketing Manager for Government Contracts.  Barb followed Ed around and worked as a professional domestic engineer.

Barb and Ed have been married for 59 years. They have five children with two living in the area and one in Florida, Nevada and downstate Michigan.  They have 9 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

Barb has been interested in postage stamp collecting, cookbooks, traveling, gardening and shell and wood crafts.  She has been a cub scout and girl scout leader and won an award from the garden club.  Ed has interests in traveling, boating and fishing, photography, the computer and sports on TV.  At one time they had a motor home and did a lot of traveling.  They now spend the winters in Florida with a daughter.

They came to the area to vacation in 1967 and bought a place in 1968.  They spent weekends on Mullett Lake until 1987 when Ed retired.  They now make the North their permanent home.

Bob and Caren were born and raised in Columbus, Ohio.  Following high school Bob attended The Ohio State University and graduated with a degree in business.  During college Bob worked as a Manager of R&S Dine store, periodical Clerk at Wartburg Press, and as an Ultrasonic Sound Lab Technician.  Bob became a career army officer and served 30 years in various assignments. In addition to college, Bob attended several Department of Defense Service Schools.  In the service he had several positions including company commander but most of his time was spent as a procurement officer and senior procurement analyst.  Bob made purchases of items that exceeded $10,000,000 such as the patriot missile.  In addition to Columbus, Ohio, Bob spent several years in the Pentagon while they lived in Alexandria, Virginia.  Bob received several awards while in the Army including the following: Superior Unit Award, Humanitarian Service Award, Achievement Award, Commendation Award, Staff Award, and Superior Civilian Service Award.

After high school, Caren worked as a payroll specialist at Corrugated Container and as a Department of Defense Personnel Specialist.  She retired when Bob moved to Virginia as she said she didn't want to participate in the two hour commutes or get up at 4:00 am to beat the traffic.

They have two children,  Todd and Jodi who live in Columbus, Ohio, along with two grandchildren, Ian and Hannah.

Bob started coming to this area in 1946 to visit an aunt and uncle who owned a cottage on Burt Lake.  Upon retirement he moved to that Burt Lake cottage and later moved to Cheboygan when they found the old cottage too small.  They are involved with Ducks Unlimited and Bob participates in the Shriners and Masons.  In their spare time, Caren enjoys crafts, cooking and beating people at cards.  Bob's hobbies are woodworking, reading, boating, environmental fund raising and playing cards.

Bob has served on the Church council, is active in our Church veteran's affairs and is a member of the pastoral search committee.

CONNIE AND REV. JEFF DINNER

Connie was born in Lansing, Michigan and graduated from high school in Livonia, Michigan.  She received her BS degree from the University of Michigan. She has lived in two locations in Germany; Huntsville, Alabama; Delaware, Ohio; and several locations in Michigan - as she stated "following a Methodist minister around". They have three children; Martin, Margaret and Sean.  She is currently employed at the Cheboygan Memorial Hospital as a physical therapist and has worked as a home health care worker for 'in and out' patient care, in a skilled nursing facility and in schools. She enjoys, tatting, carving, embroidery, reading, sailing, swimming, cross-country skiing, playing the flute, playing the handbells, weaving and Celtic music.

Rev. Jeff was born and educated in Detroit. He received his BSA degree from Lawrence Tech and his Master of Divinity degree from the Methodist Theological Seminary in Ohio.  He spent over 20 years as a Methodist Minister and has worked as an electrician and currently is employed at Norman Funeral Home in addition to serving as our pastor.  More information about Rev. JULIA AND JOHN PARKER

Julia was born in Michigan City, Indiana.  She attended Stephens College in Missouri, The University of Michigan and gaduated from Beloit College in Wisconsin with a degree in Anthropology. Julia is one of three members of our congregation that attended Stephens College, a small school in Columbia, Missouri. Marilyn Bower and Susie Jontz also attended the same school.  She worked as an allergy technician with an Eye, Nose and Throat Doctor in Chicago.  Julia worked at Rose Crans Field in Missouri during the war where they were training the military.  John was stationed there at the time.  She served as a secretary at a Junior High School for 21 years. Julia and John have two daughters, five grandchildren and four great grandchildren.  Julia has been coming to the family cottage in Topinabee for 84 years.  Her great-grandfather built the cottage in 1885 and seven generations of the family have spent time at the cottage.  She was here when the Topinabee Motel burned and stated that many in the area were worried about losing their cottage to a fire from the embers from the hotel fire. She played with Beth Chamberlain as a child when visiting Topinabee.  She enjoys knitting, gardening, reading and playing the organ. Julia has received many awards for her roses.

John was born in Atlanta,  Georgia, and graduated from high school in Miami, Florida.  He worked for Fairbanks-Morse as a deisel technician and for Fapor Corporation heading a department that made heating systems for railway cards. He enjoys woodshop "stuff" and sailing and has had a "hole in one" on the golf course.  John's main claim to fame is that he went to the same shool in Gerogia as Nancy Valrance.  At the same time?  John and Julia make their home in Holland, Michigan during the winter. They indicated that they both will be 90 when they return next summer!

Nancy was born in Cedartown, Georgia. She attended high school in Atlanta Georgia.  She attended the University of Georgia and studied property appraisal at Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina. She was a mother and housewife for several years before taking up a career in appraising.  She was the owner and chief appraiser of Carolina Appraisals Inc. when she retired. She has two sons and four grandchildren. Jim and Nancy live on Burt Lake for six months and Lake Wylie, South Carolina, the rest of the year.

They attend the River Hills Community Church in the winter. Nancy belongs to the Crooked Tree Arts Center and Indian River Golf Club for social activities. She likes to read literature, biography, history, fiction and non-fiction.  Nancy enjoys drawing and working with watercolors, bicycling and is a foodie!  Jim and Nancy met on a blind date and the rest is history.

Jim was born in Detroit and graduated from Redford High School.  He graduated from Purdue University with a degree in Aeronautical Engineering.  He received his MBA from the University of Chicago. Jim worked for several companies as an engineer and then moved into management positions.  His last position was with Carolina Appraisals where he worked for several years.

He enjoys cycling, golf, movies and science and technology.  He is a member of the Indian River Golf Club and is involved with Habitat for Humanity in South Carolina.  Jim has been coming to Burt Lake for several years with family members.

BARB AND TONY DAUER

Barb was born in Hinsdale, Illinois, graduated from high school there and received her BA degree in education from Northern Illinois University. She taught speical education students in Oregon, Ilinois where she met Tony, in a Christian School and for several years in a public school in the Los Angles area. She has lived in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Oregon, Illinois, St. Louis, Missouri, Macon, Georgia, and Laguna Woods, California.  Barb and Tony have a home in Topinabee where they spend their summers and the rest of the year is spent in California. She worked many years as a teacher of special needs children.  They have three sons and four grandchildren. She enjoys soapmaking, water color painting and Gospel Clown Ministry.  She is a member of the Laguna Woods Village String Band and the Boomers Club.  Barb is the daughter of Julia and John Parker, who are also members of the church.

Tony was born in Chicago and graduated from Fenger High School and Northern Illinois University. Tony worked for Sherman Williams Paint Company as a lab tech and as a science teacher in Oregon and Gurnee, Illinois.  He worked as a Quality Control Supervisor for two companies in Missouri and Wisconsin before working as a science teacher in California for twenty six years. Tony is an Eagle Scout and won an award in high school for playing the tuba. He is the President of a coin club, plays bridge and table tennis, and likes to fish, swim and golf.  He served as an AYSO soccer coach for ten years.  He is a member of a hikers, coin, lawn bowling, shuffleboard and billiard clubs.  Tony is also a member of Gideons International and drives for Meals on Wheels.

THE PAUL BLOME FAMILY

Nancy is a native of Detroit who attended the 
Detroit Institute of Ophthalmology. She is a certified
Ophthalmic Medical Technologist
(eye tech).
In addition to the Detroit area she spent a
summer
in Cody, Wyoming and a summer at Glen Lake,
Michigan.
She has worked part-time as an eye tech in
Petoskey.

Paul was born in Highland Park and lived in that area.
He attended Walsh College where he majored in
accounting and became a CPA. Paul was a partner
in a CPA firm in Southfield, Michigan. He is currently
the company controller at Tube Fab/Roman Engineering
in Afton.

Paul and Nancy have two children: Rachel and Bobby.
Nancy and Paul serve as church deacons.
Paul is active in leading the church services and
Nancy blesses us with her beautiful singing.
Paul has served as chairman of the Church Council
and Rachel serves as an acolyte.

Nancy is active in art, music and the theater.
She has participated in several productions
as part of the Northland Players. She also has been
hot air ballooning, parasailing, parachuting and
airplane gliding.
Paul's interests include golf, hunting, fishing, hiking,
gardening, snorkeling and painting.

KEN BURNETT

Ken was born in Pontiac, Michigan.  His home was in Birmingham, Michigan, through his years in college.  Ken attended Michigan College of Mining and Technology (Michigan Tech) and received a B.S. degree in Metallurgical Engineering.  He served in the U.S. Navy in Camp Endicott, Rhode Island, Port Huegeme, California, and the Admiralty Islands in the South Pacific.  Following his service in the Navy he returned to the Detroit area where he lived is Southfield, Livonia and Farmington Hills.  He worked for Bohn Aluminum and Brass in Detroit in research and quality control as plant metallurgist.  He worked at Bridgeport Brass Corporation in Adrian, Michigan, as a process metallurgist in the extrusion and forge departments.  While working at Huck Manufacturing in Detroit he was in the quality control department. He finished his career at Hoskin's Manufacturing as a process engineer and manager of the Detroit plant.

He had two children, a son living in Clarkston and a daughter living in Howell, Michigan. He has four grandchildren and one great grandchild.

In his spare time he enjoyed woodworking, golf, hunting, boating and traveling with his RV.

He was a member of the American Society for Metals, National Rifle Association, Benevolent Order of the Elks, the US Power Squadron and is currently a member of the Burt Lake Preservation Society. 

He moved to the Topinabee area after retiring.  He was looking for property in the Traverse City area and a Realtor there told him about property on the Mail Route.  He and Alice looked at it and bought  it and made that their home.

    SUE AND DALE PETRI


Dale was born in Wyndotte Michigan and attended schools
in Allen Park. In his junior year of high school he met a pretty young freshman name Sue.  He married that Sue in 1962 right after she graduated from High  School.  Sue received a BS in Math and Chemistry from Eastern Michigan University in 1966 and her Masters Degree incounseling in 1970.  Sue taught for 21 years before serving as a school counselor for 7 years. 

Dale received his BA and Masters in Mathematics from Eastern Michigan. In addition to teaching math, Dale coached swimming, track and golf and was a registered official in track and swimming. He also worked as a City Assessor at one time. Dale is still teaching part-time at Baker College along with his work in lawn care and work at Burt Lake  Marina.

The Petri's have two daughters Tamara and Sheryl.  They have four grandsons and agranddaughter.  They have a great grandchild due in June.

Sue enjoys reading, knitting and crocheting and  Dale enjoys snowmobiling, motorcycling, music, acting and water activities.  They also enjoy traveling in their camper.

PAUL AND RUTH WOLF

The Wolfs are natives of Ohio. Ruth was born in Johnstown and Paul in Cleveland.  They met in the Columbus area and graduated from High School together in 1947.  Ruth attended Otterbein College for two years and Paul graduated from The Ohio State University where he majored in Pharmacy.  Paul worked as a pharmacist in a hospital and also owned his own pharmacy.  Ruth was a housewife and worked in the School food service program.

Paul and Ruth have been married for 59 years. They have four children, five grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Paul has been active in the Kiwanis service club for 39 years.  He has served as a club President and a Lt. Governor in Ohio and locally.  He received the Hixon Fellowship from Kiwanis.

Ruth is an active quilter and Paul enjoys coins and toy trains.  They both are active in the local snowmobile club.  Ruth retires from snowmobiling every year but comes back for another adventure such as backpacking in Canada or riding to Mackinaw Island. They both enjoy traveling, playing cards and boating.

They found the Indian River area while visiting relatives on a fishing trip and had a second home here for many years before retiring to the area. Paul is THE offical Ohio State Fan and supporter in Northern Michigan.
