Write It Down
August 26, 2010
“...Write the vision; make it plain...” Habbakuk 2.2 NRSV
What is it we need from those around us? I remember asking the wife of a couple who came to me for marital assistance, “What is it you want from your husband?”
“I want him to help!”
“OK, got that, but what is it specifically you need? Tell him.”
“He knows already! I don’t have to tell him!”
After a short conversation, she discovered he didn’t know. She was waiting on him to figure it out and he was waiting for specific instructions.
How do we get the help we need? Wish for it? Complain that no one cares? Hope that the person finally develops the power of telepathy? Or do we spell it out?
While reading the verse from Habakkuk today, I was struck by the simplicity and power of the advice given. It’s perfect for me as a writer, husband and pastor. And it will work for a CEO, manager, spouse, parent or whatever hat we’re wearing today.
Why not take the time to write down exactly what we need this weekend? Writing it down will compel us to be precise, thus clearing the muddle and fixing in our minds what we really need. It will then provide a most helpful road map for those making the journey with us.
Prayer: Lord, help me to be clear in what I need.
