Don’t Look Back
“...do not look back or stop..." Genesis 19.17b NRSV

I once pastored a small, country church in southern Illinois where most of the congregation was farm families. We were in the midst of change and some mistakes had been made. In a meeting, an elder statesman of the church ended his remarks with, “I never could plow straight looking backwards.”
Too many of us spend our time in useless regret. We re-visit our past mistakes over and over. We say to ourselves, "If only..." That may be the most useless phrase in the English language.
Whatever it was is gone. Period. Let it go so that you don't miss the next opportunity.
I often end my Sunday morning benediction with the phrase: "...and Lord walk behind us to remind us that the past is past and this is our moment to live."
Yesterday is gone, but today is brand new. Enjoy!
Prayer: Lord, too many times I've lost the joys of the moment over the pains of the past. Help me let go and enjoy the moment.
