The hummingbirds this year are plentiful. Last Wednesday, as Kathy and I were having breakfast, one came right up to the dining room window. It looked in at us as it hovered in place for five or six seconds and then it darted off. That ability to hang in the air, seemingly motionless, has always fascinated me.
Lesson From a Hummer
“...the Lord your God may bless you in all the work you undertake.” Deuteronomy 14.29b NRSV
August 9th, 2010
The hummingbirds this year are plentiful. Last Wednesday, as Kathy and I were having breakfast, one came right up to the dining room window. It looked in at us as it hovered in place for five or six seconds and then it darted off. That ability to hang in the air, seemingly motionless, has always fascinated me.
Several years ago a hummer came within a foot of me, checking out the red Author Quest coffee cup in my hand. It was then that I heard that sound, the incredible sound of the tiny wings in blazing motion. It was louder than I expected and I could actually feel the air moving around those tiny wings. The flight of the hummingbird, its ability to hang mid-air and do those incredible acts of acrobatics, comes with a price. The price of persistent hard work.
I will take that as a lesson for me from this marvel of creation as I face this new week.
Prayer: Lord, there is work to do this week that will require me to really exert myself. Thank You for that ability and thanks for the opportunity.
