History of the Topinabee Community Church

An audio (cd) history of the Church has been compiled by Reverend Dick Hooker, a former pastor of the church.  This covers the years, 1985-2000.  The cd is available in the church office for $1.

THE FINAL
INSPECTION

The Marine stood and  faced God,
Which must always  come to pass.

He hoped his shoes  were shining,

Just as brightly as  his brass.

'Step forward now,  Marine,

How shall I deal  with you?

Have you always  turned the other cheek?

To My Church have  you been true?'

The soldier squared  his shoulders and said,

'No, Lord, I guess I  ain't.

Because those of us  who carry guns,

Can't always be a  saint.

I've had to work  most Sundays,

And at times my talk  was tough.

And sometimes I've  been violent,

Because the world is  awfully rough.

But, I never took a  penny,

That wasn't mine to  keep...

Though I worked a  lot of overtime,

When the bills got  just too steep.

And I never passed a  cry for help,

Though at times I  shook with fear.

And sometimes, God,  forgive me,

I've wept unmanly  tears.

I know I don't  deserve a place,

Among the people  here.

They never wanted me  around,

Except to calm their  fears

If you've a place  for me here, Lord,

It needn't be so  grand.

I never expected or  had too much,

But if you don't,  I'll understand.

There was a silence  all around the throne,

Where the saints had  often trod.

As the Marine waited  quietly,

For the judgment of  his God.

'Step forward now,  Marine,
You've borne your  burdens well.

Walk peacefully on  Heaven's streets,

You've done your  time in Hell.'

Welcome to Topinabee Community Church. Our mission is simple – to help people develop and maintain an intimate relationship with God. We are a non-denominational church made up of people from a wide variety of religious backgrounds.

We are not perfect, but we are all genuinely seeking a way to celebrate what Jesus has done, is doing, and will do in our lives. We believe that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purpose. (Romans 8:28)

We hope you will have the opportunity to join us as we enjoy fellowship with God. You will be welcomed, accepted as you are, and encouraged to grow in Christ.

BROWN BAG BIBLE BUNCH

The Brown Bag Bible Bunch meets at 11:00 in the church basement on the first and third Mondays of the month.  Debbie Chapoton will lead a bible study at 11:00 followed by your own special brown bag lunch.

The Brown Bag Bible Bunch will look at the divine weaving of God’s tapestry – His Holy Word. If you’ve never studied the Bible as a whole, this class is for you – like Bible 101.  However, even if you’ve read it cover to cover numerous times, this class is still for you as we will be linking 3 diverse books together each week with new and amazing insights into Scripture. If you didn’t want to join us before because you didn’t want to start in the middle of something, be assured that each week will be a fresh start with a new lesson. Please plan on coming. Brown bag optional.

Just Stay

A nurse took the tired, anxious serviceman to the bedside.

"Your son is here," she said to the old man.

She had to repeat the words several times before the patient's eyes opened.

Heavily sedated because of the pain of his heart attack, he dimly saw the young uniformed Marine standing outside the oxygen tent. He reached out his hand. The Marine wrapped his toughened fingers around the old man's limp ones, squeezing a message of love and encouragement.

The nurse brought a chair so that the Marine could sit beside the bed. All through the night the young Marine sat there in the poorly lighted ward, holding the old man's hand and offering him words of love and strength.  Occasionally, the nurse suggested that the Marine move away and rest awhile.
He refused. Whenever the nurse came into the ward, the Marine was oblivious of her and of the night noises of the hospital - the clanking of the oxygen tank, the laughter of the night staff members exchanging greetings, the cries and moans of the other patients.

Now and then she heard him say a few gentle words. The dying man said nothing, only held tightly to his son all through the night.

Along towards dawn, the old man died. The Marine released the now lifeless hand he had been holding and went to tell the nurse. While she did what she had to do, he waited.

Finally, she returned. She started to offer words of sympathy, but the Marine interrupted her.

"Who was that man?" he asked.
The nurse was startled, "He was your father," she answered.
"No, he wasn't," the Marine replied. "I never saw him before in my life."  "Then why didn't you say something when I took you to him?"

"I knew right away there had been a mistake, but I also knew he needed his son, and his son wasn't here.
When I realized that he was too sick to tell whether or not I was his son, knowing how much he needed me, I stayed."
 I came here tonight to
find a Mr. William Grey.
His Son was Killed in  Iraq
today, and I was sent to
inform him. What was this
Gentleman's Name?

The Nurse, with tears in
her eyes, answered,
Mr. William Grey.............

The next time someone needs you ... just be there.  Stay.

Andy Rooney CBS Commentator says:

I don't believe in Santa Claus, but I'm not going to sue somebody for singing a Ho-Ho-Ho song in December.  I don't agree with Darwin, but I didn't go out and hire a lawyer when my high school  teacher taught his Theory of Evolution.

Life, liberty or your pursuit of happiness will not be endangered because someone says a  30-second prayer before a football game. So what's the big deal?  It's not like somebody is up there reading the entire Book of Acts.  They're just talking to a God they believe in and asking him to grant safety to the players on the field and the fans going home from the game.

But it's a Christian prayer,  some will argue.

Yes, and this is the United States of America and Canada, countries founded on Christian principles.  According to our very own phone book, Christian churches outnumber all others better than 200-to-1.  So what would you expect -- somebody chanting Hare Krishna?

If I went to a football game in Jerusalem, I  would expect to hear a Jewish prayer.

If I went to a soccer game in  Baghdad, I would expect to hear a Muslim prayer.

If I went to a ping pong match in China ,  I would expect to hear someone pray to Buddha.

And I wouldn't be offended. It wouldn't bother me one bit.  When in Rome  .....

But what about the atheists? Is another argument.

What about them? Nobody is asking them to be baptized.  We're not going to pass the collection plate. Just humour us for 30 seconds.   If that's asking too much, bring a Walkman or a pair of ear plugs.  Go to the bathroom.  Visit the concession stand.  Call your lawyer!

Unfortunately, one or two will make that call.  One or two will tell thousands what they can and cannot do. I don't think a short prayer at a football game is going to shake the world's  foundations.

Christians are just sick and tired of turning the other cheek while our courts strip us of  all our rights.  Our parents and grandparents taught us to pray before eating, to pray before we go to sleep. Our Bible tells us to pray without ceasing.  Now a handful of people and their lawyers are telling us to cease praying.

God, help us.  And if that last sentence offends you, well, just sue me.

The silent majority has been silent too long.  It's time we tell that one or two who scream loud enough to be heard that the vast majority doesn't care what they want.  It is time that the majority rules!   It's time we tell them, "You don't have to pray; you don't have to say the Pledge of Allegiance; you don't have to believe in God or attend services that honour Him.  That is your right, and we will honour your right; but by golly, you are no longer going to take our rights away.  We are fighting back, and we WILL WIN!"

God bless us one and all...Especially those who denounce Him, God bless America and Canada, despite all our faults, We are still the greatest nations of all. God bless our service men who are fighting to protect our right to pray and worship God.

Let's make 2010 the year the silent majority is heard and we put God back as the foundation of our families and institutions. And our military forces come home from all the wars.

Keep looking up.

THE BUZZARD:

If you put a buzzard in a pen that is 6 feet by 8 feet but that is entirely open at the top,the bird, in spite of itsability to fly, will be an absolute prisoner. The reason is
that a buzzard always begins a flight from the ground with a run of 10 to 12 feet. Without space to run, as is its habit, it will not even attempt to fly, but will remain a prisoner for life in a small jail with no top.

THE BAT:

The ordinary bat that flies around at night, a remarkably nimble creature in the air, cannot take off from a level place. If it is placed on the floor or flat ground, all it can do is shuffle about helplessly and, no doubt, painfully, until it reaches some slight elevation from which it can throw itself into the air. Then, at once, it takes off like a flash.

THE BUMBLEBEE:

A bumblebee, if dropped into an open tumbler, will be there until it dies, unless it is taken out.  It never sees the means of escape at the top, but persists in trying to find some way out through the sides near the bottom.. It will seek a way where none exists, until it completely destroys itself.

PEOPLE:

In many ways, we are like the buzzard, the bat, and the bumblebee. We struggle about with all our problems and frustrations, never realizing that all we have to do is look up!
That's the answer, the escape route and the solution to any problem!  Just look up.

Sorrow looks back, Worry looks around, But faith looks up!

Live simply, love generously , care deeply, speak kindly and trust in our Creator who loves us.
